Start Preparing Today!
When we brought our son home from the hospital, we joked that we had done all this prep for the birth but really should have done more prep for everything that happened afterward…like the next 18 years that happen after the birth! Fortunately we have an amazing son who has taught us and a great village.
Like this instance, we often spend a lot of time preparing for one big life changing moment, but less time preparing for what comes afterward. That’s true about wanting to get a new role as a manager. Whether it’s becoming a manager for the first time, or taking on a much bigger team, we often think about the promotion, rather than what we’ll need to be successful in that role.
Instead of waiting to find out, prepare now. If you’re not a manager yet, ask if you can manage a project with other staff, or manage an intern. Take a management course, or ask a manager you respect to mentor you. And if you’re managing someone who wants to grow into a manager, help them develop a plan to get there.
