Focus on creating strong relationships between team members
When we think about management we often focus on how to improve our relationship with the people we supervise. But one of the most significant leaps that you can take on your journey to becoming a better manager is to create an environment that improves the working relationships between peers on your team. As you focus on building the capacity of your team, you want them to learn how to work well with you but also how to work well with each other. Most everyone tries to impress their manager, but you want them to act the same way with their peers–putting in their best effort, being responsive, providing kind, direct feedback, and receiving constructive feedback well.
Once you make this shift to focus on the dynamics between members of your team, you have the opportunity to really boost your team’s morale and productivity, because they’ll be doing it themselves.
